World Rabies Day - Doggone Safe is a
Partner... |
|
|
|
 |
World Rabies
Day is on September 28, 2008. Doggone Safe is proud to be a World Rabies
Day Partner. "We share your passion regarding child safety around dogs,
and dog bite prevention" said Peter Costa, Global Communications Officer
for the World Rabies Day Campaign.
Doggone Safe
encourages all its members and newsletter subscribers to get involved on
World Rabies Day and do some public education. You could do as little as
sending out the
World Rabies Day press release or as much as organizing your own
community event. Your local animal control agency or health department
may be holding an event. This would be a great opportunity to volunteer
to provide a Be a Tree presentation, give out information about dog bite
prevention and promote your business too. Visit the
World Rabies Day
website for more information and a list of events.

release.

We have created a postcard to help
kids and families learn how to help animals while avoiding exposure
to rabies.
The main focus of this is to stay away
from wild animals and loose dogs and to tell an adult. The best way
to help an animal is to stay away from it and call Animal Control.
Rabies in domestic dogs is rare in
most developed countries, so a loose dog that a child encounters is
not likely to be rabid. Children should be encouraged to stay away
from all dogs that do not have an owner holding the leash and to Be
a Tree if a loose dog comes up to them.
Visit our World Rabies Day page to
download the postcard in various formats and to find our how to
obtain printed copies and to customize these by branding them with
your logo and message.

Learning from the Past - Dog Pack
Problems in Alaska... |
|

An article was published recently in the
Alaska Star newspaper recounting the events that led to an attack of
five children by a pack of dogs at a schoolyard in 1962.

It is interesting to note how things have
changed over time in regard to attitudes about dogs. Doggone Safe co-founder
Teresa Lewin wrote to the editor with her thoughts on this. We encourage
all members to write to the editor any time there is a dog related story
in the local paper. This is a way to promote our safety messages,
promote the Be a Tree program and promote your business.

Does your dog bite?
The correct answer is yes, no
matter how harmless you think your dog is. Mike Ledford,
director of Hall County Animal Control, said biting is an
instinctive behavior that dogs use to protect themselves.
"That’s their
only way of saying ‘ouch’ or ‘leave me alone,’" he said. "But
they’ll almost always give you a warning sign."
The trick is to
be able to read those warning signs so you don’t get hurt. In
observance of National Dog Bite Prevention Week, animal care
professionals are trying to educate the public on what people
can do to stay safe.
